PROCLAIMING THE WORD OF LIFE, Easter Sunday 2009

Coffee House, Feb. 22nd

YOU CAN BE PART OF THE FAMILY OF GOD!

Text Box: WHAT SHOULD THE CHURCH DO IN SHAKY FINANCIAL TIMES?
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9
Most of us have long been praying that God would do something to bring the American people back to a genuine faith in the Lord Jesus.  We have recognized that our nation was too taken with its luxuries, privilege and comfort to think about or even listen to God.  The tragic events on Wall Street that have affected every nation and every person on the planet may just be the answer to our prayers.  While it is too soon to know what the long term effects that the depressed economy will have on the world, nation and upon our church family – we can now prepare for the difficulties to come.  Few of us have endured the deprivation and suffering that accompany a depression.  But we can learn how to graciously survive from those in our congregation who passed through the Great Depression of the 1929 – 1939.  Let me share some things with you to think about, and perhaps to put into action in your own life and family.
1.      Focus On God Not Investments.  We place our treasure in eternity (Lk.12:33).  Our money belongs to God just as surely as our souls.
2.      Witness.  Lean financial times are an opportunity to witness of our faith in God to those without a sure spiritual foundation.
3.      Seek Contentment.  “godliness with contentment is great gain” 1 Timothy 6:6.
4.      Rely Upon Family.  Let your family and the Family of God be your support through lean times.
5.      Community Is Critical.  Let no one be alone in the suffering, let us come closer together to lift up the weak and to share the burden.  Let us truly live as the Family of God.
6.      Essentials Only, Frugality As Habit.  When others are living without, we ought to live simply and share what God has given us.  Remember everything we have is given in trust by God.
7.      Pay As You Go, Restrict Credit.  Use credit only for essentials necessary for the conduct of your business.  Eliminate the nice to have and optional purchases.
8.      Share.  We have nothing that isn’t from the generous hand of God, now it is our turn to be generous with those in need.
9.      Survival.  When depression and lean financial times are with us, we must think in terms of survival and the survival of the family and church.
10. Lend A Hand.  During the Depressions,  when people couldn’t pay their rent, many neighbors held rent parties -- blocked off the street, played music, danced, and had people put something in the hat to help a family avoid eviction
11. Provide Credit & Budget Counseling.  We must work to help others how to live wisely, applying their finances in a godly manner.
12. The Church Becomes The Center Of Assistance.  Christian people, committed to Christ and to each other, are the source of help and solace for those in crisis.
