WORSHIP MEANS OUR LIVES ARE FOCUSED UPON GOD

Worship at Springfield Baptist is everyday, all day, throughout the day.   Our worship service can best be described as a dynamic blend of the best of the old and the new.      The Sermon notes are projected to emphasize the Word of God.   Sermons are thoroughly Biblical and practical.   Singing is led by both the Choir and the Praise Team.   We sing both the wonderful old hymns of the church and the latest contemporary praise music.   Innovative children's sermons in the sanctuary are followed by a lovingly taught Junior Church. The lessons reach the youngest in the congregation.   We joyfully take an offering because we believe that bringing our gifts to God is an integral part of our worship experience.   Worship at Springfield Baptist is truly the people of God delighting in the presence of God, and wholly honoring Him.

q     Our English word means worthship, denoting the worthiness of an individual to receive special honor in accordance with that worth.   [Harrison, p.560]

q     To worship God is to give to Him the supreme worth of which He alone is due.

q     When we come together, GOD IS THE OBJECT OF OUR WORSHIP.   We ought not come to be entertained, or for any other selfish reason.

q     Everything we do in our worship ought to be focused upon God.

1.        The sermon must not be about me, or about you, but about God and our improving our relationship with God.

2.        The music must not draw attention to the individual, but must always point to God, worship God, explain our relationship to God.

3.        The offering is not about us, but about our love for God.

4.        Prayers focus upon God.

5.        Everything, including announcements ought to focus upon God Almighty!

q     The Greek words in the New Testament used for worship are:

1.        Proskuneo – “the act of bowing or prostrating oneself in submissive lowliness and deep reverence.”   It is used in Mt.4:10 where Jesus rebukes Satan by saying, “Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.”  The physical act of bowing is a powerful demonstration of the majesty of God.   No one here should be too proud to bow his head, or get on his knees before the living God!

2.        Sebomai – “fear, reverence, awe”   It is frequently used in the NT to describe the piety of individual believers (Ac.18:7,13; 3:12; 2 Pet.1:3; 3:11)

3.        Leitourgeo – it is used of the priestly function of the believer in prayer (Ac.13:2-3), giving (Ro.15:27; 2 Cor.9:12) or in the ministry of the Gospel (Ro.15:16).   These are all acts of service in the worship of God.

q     In order for this church to focus its worship upon God, we must

1.        We come to this sanctuary, each week, with our own hearts prepared to worship the Living God, living in right relationship with each other, obedient to His Word, and ready to receive His message for this congregation.

2.        Deliberately plan our worship environment - to honor and glorify the risen Christ.

3.        Teach the whole counsel of God through preaching, music and worship in action.

4.        Always being sensitive to the leading of the Spirit.

WHAT IS WORSHIP?                Notes from Pastor Wylie Johnson's 2002 Sermon series.

KEY VERSE:  God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth. (14: 24).

1.       Worship must be both true and personal.   Neither truth nor emotion are enough to meet the standard.

2.       The heart of the believer is important, but the place of worship is not.

3.       It is necessary to be in right relationship with Jesus Christ To worship.

4.       Worship is celebrating the reality that God really does seek and save the lost.

5.       The Holy Spirit’s presence and leading is essential to worship, without the Holy Spirit, worship is futile.

6.       Worship is personal, one-to-one communication with Jesus Christ.

7.       Worship necessarily involves the uncovering of my sin before God.

8.       Worship must focus on God, not on the worshipper.

 WORSHIP IS KNOWING CHRIST

KEY VERSE:  I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.                                                                                                Philippians 3:10-11

1.        Almighty God plainly tells us who He is, what He wants from us, and amazingly, how much He loves us!

2.       The Word of God is given to us in human language so that all persons might read it and plainly understand God.

3.       It is vital to our faith, that the Word of God be taught to us

4.        But the Bible, and Christian teaching are not the end.  God’s purpose is that we might have a right relationship to Christ.  God reveals himself so that we might know him, trust him, and ultimately love him

5.       Relationship with Christ is essential to Christian worship.  Our relationship with Him is the reason we can worship God at all.

6.       We must come to worship to renew that relationship with Jesus Christ with all of the family of God.

7.       Worship must be a celebration, and thanksgiving to God for the awesome, incredible, wonderful thing He has done in our lives!

8.       We must place our highest value upon our relationship to Christ and count everything else of no importance.

9.       All of our personal possessions are garbage (vs. 8) compared to the riches we have in Christ Jesus.

10.   OUR RESPONSE:  We sing, and we give, and we pray, and we learn from the Word, and we each must take in God’s Word and resolve to be obedient to it, and live each action in worship with joy, reverence, hope and longing.

 WORSHIP WITH THE WHOLE PERSON

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: `Love your neighbor as yourself.  There is no commandment greater than these."                                                                                                             Mark 12:30-31

 1.       Mankind is designed with both a head and a heart, both are necessary, when the mind and heart are in conflict there is always trouble.

2.       The first characteristic of real worship is that our Hearts are truly informed and filled with the whole truth of revealed Scripture.

3.       Worship in truth, with our minds focused upon the revealed Word of God so that we do not fall into error.

4.       The head and heart are designed to work in a complementary manner; when the heart knows the truth of Scripture our hearts have the confidence of God.

5.       Study the Word intently…understand the Hymns…find meaning in every portion of the worship service, including the announcements!

6.       Submit my heart in worship…follow obediently, seeking God.

7.       Live the truth in joy, not simply out of obligation

8.       Bring my heart & emotions into the light and path of truth

9.       Know God with my entire being, and worship Him that way.
